How to protect your home from moisture
It is unpleasant, has a bad smell and harms your health, many of the owners have to deal with the nightmare of humidity at home.

Unfortunately, it is not always easy to solve and often results from structural defects in the house, which may require some investment in works. However, there are some simple measures that we can all take to prevent or minimize humidity indoors.
Here are the 8 most common causes of dampness and how you can avoid them

1. Condensation
Sometimes, excessive humidity indoors can cause mold. You can avoid it if you keep your home well ventilated, opening the windows and turning on the fans after cooking or showering. Cover the pans when you cook and invest in a quality ventilation system, both in the kitchen and in the bathroom. A dehumidifier can also work wonders in a damp home.

2. Poor quality plumbing
A simple leaking pipe can create a major mould problem, so it is essential that you check that all plumbing is dry and well sealed. Also make sure that all faucets and showerheads close completely. Inside the walls are there corroded pipes? Are the drain pipes in the bathrooms in good condition? A professional plumber is the ideal person to analyze these situations.

3. Clogged gutters
Another form of water accumulation in houses is clogged gutters. Confirm that the roof is in good condition and that the gutters are clean so that rainwater does not enter the house;

4. Faulty windows and doors
Water accumulation can be due to problems with windows and doors. If the fences are corroded, the wood will begin to rot or crack, with disastrous consequences. Examine the doors and windows of your home and look for the most appropriate arrangement.

5. Open chimneys
As pleasant as a fireplace can be, it can also be the cause of the dreaded humidity. Open chimneys can allow rainwater to enter and penetrate the building. So, make sure your chimney is properly prepared to keep water out and properly maintain it.

6. Poorly heated houses
Not heating your home can be a way to save, but you will pay a much higher price in the long run. Cold air absorbs less moisture than warmer air, so cold houses produce more condensation, damaging the housing structure and the health of those who live there. The large temperature swings aggravate the problem. Ideally, you should consistently heat your home, using a timer or smart heating system. However, make sure that your electricity contract is ideal for this type of need.

7. Insufficient cleaning
It's easier to find mold in homes with little cleanliness and clutter. Clean damp areas, such as the bathroom or kitchen, with a mild detergent and dry with a clean cloth. Do not leave wet or damp towels or kitchen towels lying around the house. If the silicone in the bath or shower creates mold, you should remove it. Finally, clean the silicone regularly and replace it from time to time.

8. Flooding
It may seem obvious, but homes in flood-prone areas can be particularly vulnerable to moisture. Regardless of where you live, make sure your taps are securely closed to prevent accidental flooding.

As mentioned at the beginning of this article, in addition to the financial losses that humidity and mold cause, they can cause health problems such as asthma.
Asthma affects about 150 million people worldwide. In Portugal, about 600 thousand adults and children suffer from this problem, which is seriously aggravated by humidity.
